Greetings all -
Today was an interesting and rough day at the hospital. I woke up at the beginning of the day believing that today was my day of reckoning. A lady came into my room to mark out where they'd put my ileostomy bag after the surgery. This helped reality set in pretty quickly and brought me to tears in no time at all. It was my first time ever seeing what an ileostomy bag looked like, and trying it on for size really set me off on a roller coaster ride of emotions.
Then one of the surgical staff came into the room and talked for a little bit, informing us that the surgery would most likely take place around 3 o'clock. Following that, the actual surgeon himself came in later and told us that the OR was extremely backed up and he was unsure when they would be able to get me in. He said it could be as late as 9-10 o'clock at night. He then began discussing the dangers of doing a procedure that late at night with a staff full of people that have been there since the early hours of the morning. After much debate, we agreed that moving the surgery time was best for all parties involved. This was extremely hard mentally as I had psyched myself up and was prepared to have surgery today. Now I not only have to prepare myself again mentally, but physically as well. They had already cleaned out my system and had me prepared for surgery, all of which will need to be redone.
So, the new schedule for surgery is now 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. They have sent me home up until the time of the surgery. So now I must wait anxiously until Thursday. Overall it will be better to have a set time, rather than running the risk of somebody on the staff having a minor slip up due to tiredness causing a major problem. It is another roadblock in a year full of them, but hopefully this will be the last set back I face.
Thanks to everyone for all the kind words over the past couple days. I really appreciate the support.
